SHYBOI Soundcloud

SHYBOI is a Jamaican born, New York based multidisciplinary artist. SHYBOI is the moniker she uses to cause sonic disruption. As a creative positioned between Caribbean and American culture, she uses sound to interrogate ideas of identity, notions of power, perceived histories and the entanglements that happens within these topics. She is also member of the queer artist collective #KUNQ whose ethos is centered around the production of multidimensional work through sound, visual and performance art while expanding the discourse surrounding the subcultures and genres that have become diluted or obscured in the name of hybridity. SHYBOI has three Boiler Room sets under her ever widening belt as well as two performances at MoMA PS1 and a sold out show at the Guggenheim. Recent sounds have been featured in Fact Mag, Thump, Rinse FM, MixMag, Resident Advisor and the Fader.

RIOBAMBA Soundcloud

Riobamba is an Ecuadorian-Lithuanian producer, DJ, and cultural activist based in Brooklyn. Riobamba’s rowdy, deeply researched live sets reflect back nightlife’s power as a site of joy and resistance, amplifying connective tissues between YouTube clips, dembow brujería, bodega soundtracks, and noise hyperreality “suped up with a twisted, industrial gnarl” (Complex). As a self-made bridge between música urbana’s underground movements and pioneers, Riobamba has recently shared the stage with Tego Calderón, Maluma, Nina Sky, DJ Playero, Rosa Pistola, and DJ Blass. The Fader has called her production work “a radically self-expressive piece of futurism that stands against a single, boxed-in definition of what Latinx club music can be.” Riobamba is founder of record label and creative agency APOCALIPSIS, a platform insistent on visibility for narratives by those “ni de aquí, ni de allá” (neither from here, nor there); recent highlights include curating and co-producing Boiler Room’s first reggaetón showcase, and providing ongoing music education in a Brooklyn juvenile detention center. Riobamba leads A&R for the iconic Nuyorican music label Fania, home to groundbreaking artists Celia Cruz, Héctor Lavoe, and Willie Colón, and was previously Music Editor of cultural platform Remezcla. Prior to moving to NYC, she was the first Colombia-based researcher in the Fulbright-mtvU program, studying the subversive power of digital music production in a region enduring the effects of civil conflict. Her original work has been featured in Resident Advisor, Univision, Fact Mag, The Fader, Thump, Complex, and Red Bull Music Academy Radio.

UMFANG Soundcloud

Discwoman co-founder Umfang was born in the Bronx, grew up in Kansas and has been living in Brooklyn since 2010. She holds a monthly residency Technofeminism at Bossa Nova Civic Club focusing on emerging talent. She enjoys playing with people’s expectations of how a techno set can be defined. Her amorphous polyrhythmic productions have been most recently released on Ninja Tune.

STUD1NT Soundcloud

stud1nt is a multi-instrumental artist and DJ from Queens. Their original compositions and rapid-fire mixes sit in-between the spontaneity of jazz improvisation and meticulous approaches to arrangement . They create across genres, nodding to the pulsating, hypnosis of experimental electronic music and the euphoria of ambient loops and psychedelic riffs. Also a member of the queer media collective #kunq, their work is attentive to the politics of queerness in relation to sound and space. stud1nt has presented their workshops on creative production at Vassar College, the New School, Recess Art, Pioneer Works, and Ableton Loop. They have been featured in the New Yorker, Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, the Fader, FACT Magazine, and MixMag. Notable performances include sets for Boiler Room New York, RBMA NY Festival, GHE20G0TH1K, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, Ableton Loop x CDR Klubnacht, and 3hd Festival.

JUANA Soundcloud

Juana (the artist formerly known as Brdhs) is so house. Birthed from a tribe of opera singers and children of the soul mother from the universal vibrations of the earth spirit, Juana grew up on a steady diet of smooth jazz, jheri curl funk, los discos, and prog rock, which shaped her sensibilities immeasurably. She began collecting records at age 4 and stealing tapes and CDs from Tower Records at around 14. Juana has been a DC staple since 2004. 2016 and 2017 opened up many new avenues for Juana, joining forces with numerous local heavy hitters in DC, playing the Acid People party series with the likes of Ron Jackson, Damon Bradley, and Tsurugi. Juana also recently linked up with TechnoFist, Void Archive, and Select DC as part of the quickly growing Sequence party series, on opening duties for Detroit’s BMG, and getting muy loca closing for Discwoman (Volvox and Umfang) and Tommy Four Seven. She’s also had the good fortune to open up for the likes of Rick Wade and Kai Alce, Stefan Goldmann, and Pan-Pot, plus play a couple times at Brooklyn’s famed Chevy Nova Pizza Club.
